Giglamps rambles

  Starting with some more art-in-progress today, that I found in the process of feathering the nest a bit more on Newalone; the filename for this one is 'massive spoilers.reb' but that's a version that's further along, so here's the version with the spoilery layer removed. Definitely got ahead of myself with how 'ready' this project was for its close-up, like it rrreally isn't anywhere near yet but well, what can I say? I got excited. Also took a little run at playing Silent Hill 4 on this computer last night, just to see how it runs and sure, a modern PC shouldn't have any bloody trouble running a PS2-era game but I've been burnt before (the absolute state of Sega Saturn emulation circa 2010. Painful .) and didn't have the highest of hopes. Still, it runs smoothly, the controls are responsive, it looks... appropriately crunchy and muddy for the era, so once I've wrapped up my current playthroughs on other games, then that'll be nice...

Two posts in one day? What's the meaning of this?! (To be fair, the Cats one was put together on Monday, I just scheduled it for Wednesday because that is the traditional day for posting Cats .) Anyway, I had another wobble and was weighing up giving up on art for probably about the millionth time, then cooled off and quietly got this done. The sketch is from a while back, my motivation troughed and it's been languishing on a memory stick for a bit.  The mood music for this one is Titus Alone by Aldous Harding ; there's also Titus Groan , which has glossier production and more filled-out instrumentation, but I like the more sparse atmosphere on this one, it's more liminal and eerie. Given the history of the Gormenghast trilogy and the circumstances under which 'Titus Alone' was written, it's also appropriate that it has a comparatively light touch, but that's a tangent for another time. Some concept art for today and possibly a treat for the old guard, a mostly step-by-step process post, complete with excessive annotations! Going to keep this brief as I have to make some lunch (important), then get ready and head off to work, so here's the finished effort to start with... And now, the work in progress efforts... The initial rough sketch Started on the lineart, then switched the canvas colour to black, so I could see the lines for the clouds and waves more clearly. Lineart done, image cropped... Returning to the usual canvas colour (working on these nice sandy-coloured backgrounds gives the colours a bit more warmth, which I find very pleasing.)  Starting to paint a stormy sky!  A little bit of extra colour overlay for the waves, which wound up looking like some trendy bathroom decor from the mid-2010s.
